Coleman is a Lancashire native. She was the head girl in the Arnold School, Blackpool and received straight A's in her A levels. Steven Moffat announced at a Doctor Who press conference on 21 March that Coleman, who had replaced Karen Gillan as the companion of the Doctor after Arthur Darvill left the series and was to play the role with Matt Smith. Moffat has decided to choose her for the role since she seemed to have the strongest chemistry with Smith. Also, she spoke faster than Smith.
