She covered sports for some of the biggest media outlets across the country. She was a reporter for The Washington Post nearly a decade covering Grand Slam Tennis and Grand Slam Football, as being a basketball reporter at numerous Olympics. Nichols was awarded two Emmy Awards during her nine-year period at ESPN as well as being featured on many of the network's most popular programs like NFL Countdown or SportsCenter, was transferred to ESPN following 2004. In her role as a reporter at the sidelines, she was also a participant on Monday Night Football. After that, she joined CNN and Turner Sports. The show she first created and hosted was self-titled, Unguarded featuring Rachel Nichols, and aired weekly on CNN as well as CNN International. More than 1 billion people saw it on the air worldwide. Nichols also reported for TNT in NBA broadcasts during playoffs and All-Star broadcasts. Alongside covering for TBS, she also covered golf and baseball broadcasts as well as Final Four on CBS. In the 42 year history of this award, it was the only time a woman had been one of the nominees.
